Football Legends Association (FLA) says Malawi National Women’s Football Team players have automatically attained legends status following their exploits at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).
The Scorchers’ fairy-tale run at the maiden Wafcon tournament has seen them qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, and this evening they face Cameroon in the final.

FLA board chairperson Jim Kalua, in an interview, said the Scorchers are eligible to register with the association, having attained legends status.
He said: “As FLA board chairperson and founder, of course, also in my capacity as Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson, I am very delighted with the history which the Scorchers have made.
“I need to mention here that according to the Football Legends Association constitution, the Scorchers coaches and players are all eligible to register with FLA. They are legends. What they have achieved is what it takes to be a true legend.”
Kalua also thanked government for supporting the Scorchers with K600 million for the team’s expenses for Wafcon participation.
He said: “I need to thank the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata for his support. I also have to applaud Football Association of Malawi president Fleetwood Haiya for investing a lot in women’s football. What we are seeing are the fruits of his efforts.”
Kalua said there are also several individuals who have contributed to the development of women’s football.
“My good friend Isaac Jomo Osman, member of the Scorchers technical panel: Head coach Lovemore Fazili, assistant coaches Maggie Chombo Sadik and Abbas Makawa, goalkeeper trainer Sibusiso Padambo as well as physical fitness coach Robert Ng’ambi, who are all FLA members, have made history in Morocco.
“I can’t also fail to mention the Andrew Chikhosi Andrew who is Silver Strikers Women coach and his brother Shadreck, as well as Anthony Sendema, for their contribution towards women’s football development.”
By qualifying for the final, the Scorchers have become the first debutants to go this far at the tournament, and they are now gunning for the title to make yet another piece of history.
